Sure, we can go on and on about why Ma’s policies benefit the upper-middle corporate class more than everybody else in the country, and that he probably doesn’t care too much about race relations in Taiwan. However, just because Ma (and the KMT) are more Chinese-friendly, does not mean he isn’t Taiwanese and is dying for reunification.
The reality is that we live in a Pro-China global political economy. Even if Tsai gets elected, we will still be branded as Chinese-Taipei on the world stage, and I just can’t see how cross-strait relations would be conducted differently (on a substantial level) under a Tsai regime. In order to be re-elected, which is the goal of all politicians, she would need to have policies that will robustly boost our economy. In this day and age, that can only happen for Taiwan if it trades with China.
Sure, you can buy into the DPP rhetoric that Ma is trying to sell Taiwan to China, but just know substantially, Tsai and her party wouldn’t be doing anything differently if they were elected to steer.
Its a shitty situation, but it is what it is. Ma’s wife (left-hand corner of the picture) knows.

Mr. Ma, the pres…um…that guy…of Chinese-Taipei
Would love to be proven wrong. Hope for the best and expect the worst.
